UNIVERSITY students descended The Hill, home of Ski Rossendale in Rawtenstall, for the latest Kings Ski Club Northern race.
The dry-ski slope has hosted the university ski clubs from all over the north for around 15 years as one of two venues for the competition.
One of the organisers Jamie McGregor, from Kings Northern, said: “We have 20 mixed teams, nine ladies, and three snowboarding teams and every team has five people in and we have more who come along to watch and support their teams.”
Students came from Sheffield, Liverpool, Manchester, Hull, Lancaster, Leeds and other Northern universities.
Four Northern competitions are held, two at The Hill and the others are at Silksworth Ski Slope in Sunderland.
Jamie said: “Although it is competitive, and there are places in a national final in Gloucester next Easter, it is also a fun event and a good social meeting for the students.”
Manager at The Hill Dave Fuller said it was always great to welcome the university students back to The Hill and often skiers who had started their sporting career in the kids’ club in Rossendale returned as ski captain of their university team.
He said: “We are now at the start of the ski season and we had 145 children at the club on Saturday, which is one of the highest numbers we have had and 25 of them were newbies.
“Our ski lessons are also becoming busier as people are preparing themselves ahead of their ski holidays.
“We promote our lessons as The Hill today – the mountains tomorrow. Why pay thousands of pounds for a ski holiday without first making sure you can ski safely and with confidence before you set off and face the bigger slopes?”
The next two rounds of the Kings Ski Club Northern competition will be next March.
